Murray’s Mint US Open

by eric on September 11, 2012

So congratulations to Andy Murray, winning his first Grand Slam title at the fifth attempt.

It’s shows that if you keep knocking at the door, employ hard work and dedication and have unwavering faith in your abilities, eventually it will open up.

The difference that made the difference could well have been him working with former world number 1 Ivan Lendl. His preparation and game plan (particularly on big points) has changed and he is beginning to reap the rewards. His temperament is much better then in the past and this will help him in the future as well as having the knowledge that he can win the biggest events.

Olympic gold and US Open winner. Not a bad year for the man from Dunblane.

A classic battle with Novak Djokovic lasting just short of five hours tested every facet of him, physically and emotionally. Showing the grit and determination he did to win the fifth set after Djokovic was on a roll was impressive.

Had he not won it would have been a bitter pill to swallow by his own admission.

There were also some great sub plots, such as no player had ever lost their first five Grand Slams finals in a row. Like his Coach Lendl, he won at the fifth time of asking and it was 76 years to the day that the last British winner Fred Perry won his final Major.

Surely at only 25 he will have more opportunities to win Grand Slam titles. Especially as Roger Federer is 31 and Rafa Nadal continues to struggle with knee problems. He and Djokovic could well establish a rivalry in Grand Slam finals for the next few years that could match ones from the past like Borg/McEnroe, Sampras/Agassi, Federer/Nadal.

Should be great to watch.

Andy Murray, 2012 US Open winner, take a bow sir.
