Course History
A short history of the Belmont estate and Belmont Golf Course

Belmont House and the Belmont Estate

Belmont House

The Belmont Estate was, at one time, a vast estate stretching from the Clehonger area in the West, through the current site along the south bank of the River Wye and south towards Hayward and Callow Hill.

Belmont House, in the lower ground floor of which the current golf Clubhouse is situated, was originally designed and built by James Wyatt for the then owner, a Mr John Matthews, in 1788. This "original" bath stone Belmont House may still be seen on the elevation with the large bays facing the river.

In the 1860s the House was extended and extensively remodelled by EW Pugin for the the Wegg-Prosser family who were sponsoring the construction of the adjacent Bemont Abbey, also by Pugin. This extension added a gothic sandstone element to Belmont House which can still be seen today.

Belmont House is listed, grade II*.

In the early 1980s the Chichester family who by now owned the Belmont Estate obtained planning permission for the construction of the golf course on what was at the time farmland.

The 18 hole Belmont Golf Course was designed by Bob Sandow and opened by Sean Connery in 1983.

The course was partly remodelled in 1985 when many of the trees that are a feature of the course were planted.

The Belmont Lodge Hotel was opened in 1986 and the current owners, Golf Inns Ltd, acquired the property in 1993.
